When do schoolchildren study and rest in Austria?

There are two types of schools in Austria – private and public. Private schools with public rights follow the same school year schedule as public schools. This is usually followed by special schools, polytechnic schools and vocational schools. There are two levels of compulsory schooling:

  1. Primary school (6 to 10 years old).
  2. Secondary school or lower level of gymnasium (10 to 14 years old).

Unlike school holidays in Germany, where the dates are determined by the federal states, the school year schedule in Austria is determined by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. It varies slightly in different federal states. Austrian schoolchildren will have the following holidays:

  • Summer holidays (dates vary in different federal states).
  • Autumn holidays.
  • Christmas holidays.
  • Semester holidays (dates vary in different federal states).
  • Easter holidays.
  • Feasts of Pentecost.

Important! The state portal of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research states: deviations in the school year schedule are possible in some schools or types of schools.

In addition to school holidays, children in Austria have holidays on public holidays. However, unlike many countries, there is no change in the day of rest in Austria. If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the working day schedule does not change. On the previous Friday and the following Monday, schools are open.

In addition to the regular holidays, some federal states have additional days off. Usually, these are All Souls’ Day and/or Patron Saint’s Day. We have listed these dates for each federal state below .

In Austria, there is a liberal attitude towards representatives of different religions. Students can notify the school administration that they need one or more days for religious needs. But there are certain restrictions. Representatives of the main religions submit a list of important dates when children must be released from classes. Only on these days can a student or his parents get an additional day off.
