Important to know: When schoolchildren in Australia take their holidays

During the academic year, Australian schools close for school holidays four times. However, the start and end dates vary by school type and state or territory. There are several types of schools in Australia:

• Public schools.
• Catholic schools.
• Independent schools.
• Private schools.

School holidays in Australia are the same for all state schools located in the same region. The only exception is summer holidays in New South Wales. This state is divided into two divisions: Western and Eastern. In the Western Division, summer holidays end one week later than in the Eastern Division. Catholic, private, and independent schools may deviate from the official academic year schedule.

In addition to school holidays, schools in Australia are closed on public and major local holidays. National public holidays are listed below.
