When do German students take a break from school?

The school year is divided into parts by several vacation periods. In all federal states of Germany, children have the following school holidays:

Summer holidays.
Autumn vacation.
Christmas Holidays.
Easter holidays.

Some states have other school holidays. Sometimes they consist of one day, which is called a “semi-annual break” or just a day off from classes. Here are options for other school holidays in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 in Germany:

Winter holidays.
Spring break (spring holidays).
Holidays for Pentecost.

Other than school holidays, schools are closed on German public holidays. In some cases, the government makes a “bridge” or “bridge day”: a non-school day that connects a public holiday to a weekend, Saturday, or Sunday. For example, in 2025 in Bremen May 30 is declared a school-free day. Due to it, schoolchildren will rest for four days in a row – from the Ascension of Christ (Thursday May 30, 2025) to Sunday June 2, 2025.

Why do school holidays in Germany differ in different federal states?

Germany is divided into 16 federal states. Each of them has broad autonomy, which also applies to the field of education. Therefore, the schedule of the school year in different lands can vary significantly. There are several reasons for this:

Regional needs. Different states may favor holidays at different times depending on local customs or industries. For example, states with large numbers of tourists may plan breaks to take advantage of the peak tourist season.

Logistics. The diversity of vacations in different states helps to manage the demand for travel and accommodation throughout the country. This avoids the collapse of infrastructures if all the students in Germany will rest at the same time. Germans love to travel, so the tourism and logistics infrastructures are especially sensitive.

Family preferences. When compiling school calendars, the governments of the federal states of Germany consult with associations of parents and teachers. The schedule of the school year is drawn up in such a way as to take into account the preferences of local residents.
