Important to Know: When Schoolchildren in Australia Take Holidays

During the academic year, Australian schools close for school holidays four times. But the start and end dates of the holidays vary depending on the type of school and the state or territory. There are several types of schools in Australia:

  1. Public schools (6699 or 69.7%).
  2. Catholic schools (1766 or 18.4%).
  3. Independent schools (1,149 or 12.0%).
  4. Private schools (not included in statistics).

School holidays in Australia are the same for all state schools in the same region. The only exception is the summer holiday in New South Wales. This state is divided into two divisions: Western and Eastern. In the Western Division, summer holidays end one week later than in the Eastern Division. Catholic, private and independent schools may deviate from the official school year schedule.

In addition to holiday periods, schools in the Green Continent are closed on public and major local Australian holidays. The national public holidays are listed below. Below we provide the exact dates of school holidays in Australia. You will also find lists of local Australian holidays for each state or territory (dates when Australian schools are closed).
