What is IMPORTANT to know about school holidays in Norway.

The territory of Norway is divided into “fylkeskommune” – district municipalities. Until 2024, their number is 11. Starting from January 1, 2024, the three district municipalities are divided and their number increases to 15. Each district municipality sets its own school year schedule.

The school year schedule is a guideline, but most schools adhere to it. Each school may change the start and end dates of holiday periods but must adhere to public holidays. Therefore, it is better to check the school year schedule at your school.

In Norway, schools are closed on Norwegian public holidays. Flag days are regular school days unless designated as non-working days. On unofficial traditional or religious holidays, Norwegian schools may hold themed events.

What changes in 2024?

From 1 January 2024, the number of county municipalities increases from 11 to 15. School holidays in Norway 2023-2024 remain unchanged. The school year schedule remains the same as before the separation. School holidays in Norway 2024-2025 are slightly changing in some county municipalities.

The district municipality of Viken is abolished. In its place, three former district municipalities are being restored: Akershus, Buskerud, Østfold. School holidays in Norway 2024-2025 for these administrative units are given below.
