In this publication, ALYO.Info has collected information about school holidays in the Netherlands 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. We will tell you how rest periods depend on the location of your school. Here are the exact dates of summer, autumn, Christmas, spring and May holidays for schoolchildren in the Netherlands in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years.

Dependence of school holidays dates by region

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is divided into three regions – North, Central and South. This division applies only to the dates of school holidays. They have Christmas and May holidays at the same time, and autumn, spring and summer breaks begin and end with a difference of 1-2 weeks.

The division into regions took place until 2002. At that time, their borders passed along the borders of municipalities. But in 2002, 2005 and 2011, some municipalities were abolished and divided among neighboring ones. Therefore, the structure of the school regions in the Netherlands has become more complex. Below are the lists of provinces, municipalities and localities by region.

    Rest for the holidays

There are seven national holidays in the Netherlands on which virtually all schools are closed. But each educational institution has the right to conduct classes on such a day. The fact is that legally public holidays are not non-working or non-school days. Therefore, you should ask if your school has classes on the following days:

    • New Year.
    • Easter Monday.
    • King’s Day.
    • Liberation Day.
    • Ascension.
    • Trinity Monday.
    • Christmas.
    • Three Kings Day.

Schools have the right to impose release of students from classes on religious holidays. For example: Good Friday, Eid al-Adha, Yom Kippur. In this case, all students receive an additional free day, regardless of their religion. Be sure to check with your school if it exempts children from classes due to religious needs.
