What you NEED to know about school holidays in Norway.
Norway is divided into “fylkeskommune”—county municipalities. Until 2024, there were 11 of them. Effective January 1, 2024, three county municipalities will be separated, increasing the total to 15. Each county municipality sets its own school schedule.
The school year schedule is advisory, but most schools adhere to it. Each school can change the start and end dates of vacation periods, but must adhere to public holidays. Therefore, it’s best to check with your school for the school year schedule.
In Norway, schools are closed on Norwegian public holidays. Flag days are regular school days unless otherwise designated. On unofficial traditional or religious holidays, Norwegian schools may hold themed events.
What changed in 2024?
Effective January 1, 2024, the number of county municipalities increased from 11 to 15. The county municipality of Viken was abolished. Three former county municipalities were reinstated in its place: Akershus, Buskerud, and Østfold. The 2025-2026 school holidays in Norway for these administrative units are listed below.
The district municipality of Troms og Finnmark has been abolished. Two former district municipalities have been reestablished in its place: Finnmark and Troms. The 2025-2026 school holidays in Norway for these administrative units are listed below.
