School holidays in Sweden 2025-2026 – important information!
Sweden is divided into 21 regions, each of which consists of municipalities. Currently, there are 290 municipalities in the Kingdom of Sweden. School holiday dates in public schools are determined by the Education Committee of each municipality, but they are usually the same for the entire region or municipality. Swedish schools have five holiday periods:
- Summer holidays.
- Autumn holidays.
- Christmas holidays.
- Sports holidays (winter holidays).
- Easter holidays.
In addition to school holidays, children have time off on public holidays. If a public holiday falls on a Thursday, Friday is considered a “squeezed” day. The school may make this a day off so that children have four consecutive days off.
Independent and private schools can set their own school year schedule. However, they are required to adhere to general requirements regarding the number of school days and school holidays. The School Act (2010:800) and the supplementary Skolförordning (2011:185) stipulate that the school year must consist of:
- Not less than 178 school days.
- At least 12 days of school holidays (excluding summer holidays).
