We’ll also provide the exact dates for summer, fall, Christmas, spring, and May school holidays in the Netherlands for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 academic years.

School holiday dates depending on the region

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is divided into three regions – North, Central and South. This division concerns only the dates of school holidays. Christmas and May holidays are held at the same time, and autumn, spring and summer breaks begin and end with a difference of 1-2 weeks.

The division into regions took place until 2002. At that time, their borders ran along the borders of municipalities. But in 2002, 2005 and 2011, some municipalities were abolished and divided between neighboring ones. Therefore, the structure of school regions in the Netherlands became more complex. Below are lists of provinces, municipalities and localities by region.

Holidays

There are seven national holidays in the Netherlands, on which almost all schools are closed. But every school has the right to hold classes on such a day. The fact is that legally, public holidays are not non-working or non-school days. Therefore, you should inquire whether your school has classes on the following days:

  • New Year.
  • Easter Monday.
  • Royal Day.
  • Liberation Day.
  • Ascension.
  • Trinity Monday.
  • Christmas.
  • Feast of the Three Kings.

Schools have the right to introduce exemption of students from classes on religious holidays. For example: Good Friday, Eid al-Adha, Yom Kippur. In such cases, all students, regardless of their religion, receive an additional free day. Be sure to check with your school whether it exempts children from classes due to religious needs.
