What is IMPORTANT to know about school holidays in Norway.

Norway is divided into “fylkeskommune” – county municipalities. Until 2024, there were 11 of them. From 1 January 2024, three county municipalities will be divided and their number will increase to 15. Each county municipality sets its own school schedule.

The school year schedule is advisory in nature, but most schools adhere to it. Each school can change the start and end dates of the vacation periods, but must adhere to public holidays. Therefore, it is better to check the school year schedule in your school.

In Norway, schools are closed on Norwegian public holidays. Flag days are normal school days unless designated as non-working days. On unofficial traditional or religious holidays, Norwegian schools may hold themed events.

What changes in 2024?

As of 1 January 2024, the number of county municipalities will increase from 11 to 15. The school holidays in Norway 2023-2024 will remain unchanged. The school year schedule will remain the same as before the division. The school holidays in Norway 2024-2025 will change slightly in some county municipalities.

The county municipality of Viken is abolished. Three former county municipalities are restored in its place: Akershus, Buskerud, Østfold. The school holidays in Norway 2024-2025 for these administrative units are listed below.

The county municipality of Troms og Finnmark is abolished. The two former county municipalities of Finnmark and Troms are restored instead. The school holidays in Norway 2024-2025 for these administrative units are listed below.

The county municipality of Vestfold og Telemark is abolished. In its place, two former county municipalities are restored: Telemark, Vestfold. The school holidays in Norway 2024-2025 for these administrative units are listed below.
