When are school holidays in Belgium in 2025-2026 and 2026-2027? Why and how do the dates of school holidays differ for Belgian schoolchildren? In this publication, we provide the exact dates of summer, autumn, Christmas, spring, and Easter holidays in all Belgian language communities in 2025, 2026, and 2027.
Belgium is divided into regions and language communities. There are three of them: the Flemish Region, the Walloon Region, and the Brussels-Capital Region. For clarity, we’ve marked them on the map:

Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French, and German. The kingdom also has three linguistic communities: Flemish, French, and German-speaking. The boundaries and territories of the regions and linguistic communities do not always coincide. The Brussels-Capital Region belongs to both the Flemish and French communities. The German community is part of the Walloon Region.

The school year schedule depends on which linguistic community your school belongs to. School holidays generally overlap, but have different names. For example, the February school holidays in Flanders are called “Spring Break.” In the French Community, they are officially called “Carnival Break.” Below, we list the school holidays in Belgium for all communities.
Why is the school year schedule different and what are the consequences?
Historically, the education system in the Kingdom of Belgium was not centralized. Each linguistic community chose its own direction. The country was initially highly decentralized, which affected the education sector.
Moreover, the proximity to other countries had a significant influence. The Flemish Community gravitates toward the Netherlands, the French Community toward France, and the German-speaking Community toward Germany. Such differences have a negative impact on processes within the country.
For example, almost the entire population of the German-speaking Community speaks German. Since there are no universities within its territory, young people are forced to study in Flanders, the French Community, or Germany. After completing their studies, they often settle outside their home country. This is especially easy now—as Belgium is a member of the European Union, its borders are open to its residents.
Differences in the school schedule create inconveniences for families whose children study in different language communities. The decentralized nature of the education system makes it difficult for students to communicate with each other. The same applies to teachers.

Important! In the German-speaking Community of Belgium, all schools except the Music Academy are closed on Saturdays . On Sundays, all educational institutions are closed to teachers and students.
