How is school education organized in Switzerland?

In the Swiss Confederation, the main role in the education system is played by the cantons and communities (municipalities). They organize the education system and manage it. But there are certain standards that are followed throughout the country.

Swiss children receive compulsory education from the age of four. By the age of 15-16, the Swiss complete the 11-year course of compulsory education. It includes:

First cycle of education (kindergarten and primary school): 8 years (7 years in the canton of Ticino).
Lower secondary education (lower secondary): 3 years (4 years in the canton of Ticino).

After compulsory education, young Swiss can complete secondary education. They can choose one of two options:

General education program or complete secondary education (prepares for higher education).
Basic vocational education and training (obtaining a profession with the possibility of employment in the specialty).

Important! Below is information about summer, autumn, winter, spring and Easter school holidays in Switzerland in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Dates shown are for elementary school and first grade high school (unless otherwise noted). Schools providing basic vocational education can also follow this academic year schedule.

Do children go to school for the holidays in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, the dates of public holidays are set by each canton. The only exception is the National Day of Switzerland, which is celebrated annually on August 1 throughout the country. It is officially obligatory for all cantons. As a public holiday, all cantons unanimously set three dates:

New Year.
Ascension.
Christmas.

There are 9 to 15 public holidays in different cantons. By law, they are equated with Sundays. That is, schools are closed on these days. Also, each canton can set up to 8 additional public holidays.

Some cantons establish additional days without classes, which are called “bridges”. They are introduced to connect the holiday and Saturday or Sunday. So schoolchildren get several days of rest in a row. For example, in 2023, the Ascension of Christ was on Thursday, May 18th. In many cantons, May 19 was made an additional free day. Due to this, schoolchildren rested from Thursday to Sunday, from May 18 to May 21, 2023.

Important! The school administrations of the canton of Aargau can add up to three free days from school. They can be divided in two. For example, instead of three days, you can enter two days without classes and two reduced days.
