    Holidays in the Czech Republic 2024

    Witch burning is a Czech holiday with pagan origins. On this night, large bonfires are lit throughout the country to “burn away winter,” drive away evil spirits and welcome the arrival of spring. The main bonfire is called the “witch’s bonfire.” Burning an effigy of a witch in a fire is believed to drive away evil influences. This tradition symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.

    Royal silvering dates back to the Middle Ages. The story goes that King Charles IV got lost while hunting in the forest on July 6, 1348. He met an old coal miner who led him out of the forest. In exchange for this good deed, Charles granted the inhabitants of Kralovice the right to collect firewood and produce charcoal in the royal forests around Roudnice. He also rewarded them with a feast of roasted oxen, bread and wine.

    Barborka is a pre-Christmas festival that honors Saint Barbara. This early Christian martyr is associated with the mining industry and those who work with explosives. Therefore, it has strong roots in the Czech mining communities. On Barborki, young girls, known as “Barborki”, dress in white, wear crowns made of branches and light candles as they stroll through the towns. The candles represent miners’ lamps, and their crowns symbolize the martyrdom of Barbara.
