What public holidays are there in Norway?
All Norwegian holidays can be divided into 4 types:
- Public holidays.
- Red days.
- Unofficial holidays.
- Flag days.
Public holidays in Norway are defined by the Public Holidays and Public Holidays Act of 24 February 1995. These days, all residents of the country have the right to a day off from work. If an employee returns to work, he receives compensation, which is determined in the employment contract or established by law.
Red days are official non-working days for all residents of the country. But they are not official public holidays. Norway has two red days: Labor Day and Constitution Day on May 17, 1814.
Unofficial holidays are not regulated by law. Most often they are associated with religious traditions or historical events. For example: Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween.
Flag days mark significant events. They are defined by the Regulations on Amendments to the Rules for the Use of the State and Commercial Flag 2024. On Flag Day, flags are raised on all buildings of government organizations and institutions. Norwegians often display the national flag on their homes and private establishments.
