In this publication, ALYO.info will tell you about the holidays in New Zealand in 2023, 2024, 2025. We will tell you what holidays and significant days exist in the country. We give the exact dates of national, regional and most important unofficial holidays in New Zealand.
What holidays are there in New Zealand?
Officially, all holidays in New Zealand are divided into two types. National public holidays are celebrated throughout the country. For most New Zealanders, these days are non-working days. For work on such dates, compensation is provided in the form of additional remuneration and/or time off. There are trade bans or restrictions on some New Zealand public holidays.
Provincial anniversary days are celebrated in certain regions or parts of the country. They are usually dedicated to historical events. For example, the date of the founding of the province or the landing of the colonists on the shore.
How holidays are postponed in New Zealand
In New Zealand there is a practice of postponing public holidays. If a national public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be moved to Monday or Tuesday. The following holidays are postponed to Monday:
- New Year.
- Waitangi Day.
- Anzac Day.
- Christmas.
For the following holidays, the transfer system is more complicated. If they fall on Saturday, they are moved to Monday. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is moved to Tuesday. These are the days:
- The day after the New Year.
- Second day of Christmas (Boxing Day).
Anniversary days and their dates
Anniversary days are dedicated to specific dates. But usually they are celebrated on other days, usually on the following Mondays. This is done for the convenience of New Zealanders so that they have three days off from work in a row. Every year, the dates of anniversary days change according to rules determined by law.
Anniversary days in New Zealand are a complete analogue of national public holidays. Where they are officially celebrated, residents have the right to a day off work. Educational institutions are closed these days. Often the school holiday schedule in New Zealand is shifted around them so that students can devote more time to studying.
