What holidays do Germans celebrate?
There are state (legal, official) holidays in Germany. On these days, every resident of the country or working in Germany has the right to a paid day off or additional compensation for work on this day.
By law, there are federal public holidays and regular public holidays in Germany. Federal holidays are celebrated throughout the country. In reality, there is only one such day – the Day of German Unity. All the others are public holidays of the federal states.
There are holidays that are celebrated throughout the country. For example:
- New Year.
- Labor Day.
- Christmas.
They are adopted at the level of individual states and can be cancelled. Some public holidays are public holidays in individual districts, municipalities or communes. We will indicate this in the description of a specific holiday. Also in the lists you will find the names of the federal states in which the corresponding day is a public holiday.
In addition to legal state holidays, there are memorable dates, church and unofficial holidays. Memorial dates are accepted at the official level, but are not non-working days. Some church holidays (for example, Easter Monday or Epiphany) are state holidays.
Frequently asked questions about German public holidays
Is a holiday in Germany moved if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday?
In Germany, there is no provision for holiday transfer. If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, Sunday or other non-working day, the employee cannot receive an additional day off.
Who will determine the dates of public holidays?
There is only one federal public holiday in Germany: German Unity Day. This day is fixed at the federal level. All other public holidays are determined at the federal state level.
Is there compensation for working on a public holiday?
If an employee worked on a public holiday, he is entitled to an additional payment.
What is the pay on a public holiday?
If an employee does not work on a public holiday, he/she receives payment at the usual rate. However, the remuneration amount does not include compensation for expenses. If a public holiday falls on a non-working day, the employee is not paid wages.
How is a public holiday determined – by place of residence, work, or company location?
The dates of public holidays in Germany vary depending on the federal state, city or municipality. There are cases where there is no public holiday at the location of the company’s headquarters, but there is one at the employee’s place of work. The Federal Labor Court, ruling of 17 March 2010, 5 AZR 317/09, determined that the law on public holidays in force at the place of work is decisive.
Maundy Thursday is a church holiday, not a public holiday. We have included it here to indicate that it is a possible non-school day. If Maundy Thursday does not fall during school holidays, then schoolchildren in Baden-Württemberg are exempt from classes.
INTERESTING FACT: Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday are considered official state holidays only in the states of Brandenburg and Hesse. Moreover, in Hesse all Sundays are considered holidays.
